Welcome Hadi!

Hadi Mirmohammad becomes the newest member to join the research group.  Hadi joins group having recently completed his B.S. at the University of Tehran in Mechanical Engineering. Hadi’s work will focus on the development of SEM-based experimental techniques to study mechanism activity during deformation.

Kingstedt and Lambros receive the M. Hetenyi Award for the best research paper published in Experimental Mechanics

At the annual conference of the Society of Experimental Mechanics, Dr. Kingstedt and his PhD advisor Dr. John Lambros (UIUC) received the M. Hetenyi award for the best research paper published in Experimental Mechanics.  In their paper titled “Ultra-high speed imaging of laser-induced spallation”, images are captured at 200 million frames per second capturing the entire failure event which lasts less than 50ns. Visualization of events which occur over these timescales are particularly challenging as they require precise triggering and control, as well as the generation of large quantities of light. The paper can be found at the following link: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11340-014-9973-0

Kingstedt (PI), McCarter, and Leang receive $195k for the acquisition of a Shimadzu HPVX2 high speed camera

In engineering seeing is believing.  The acquisition of a world class high speed camera will be a critical component of improving understanding of dynamic events which have not been visualized previously. The Shimadzu HPVX2 camera will be used by individuals across campus to investigate rotor flutter, blast, dynamic fracture, and high rate deformation. A huge thank you to all of the 20+ faculty member who supported the acquisition of the camera. For the Department announcement see:  https://mech.utah.edu/kingstedt-leang-and-mccarter-RIF

Congratulations Raphael for being selected for the UEC scholarship!

Each year the Utah Engineers Council awards scholarships to outstanding junior engineering students in the state of Utah. Raphael was selected based on his exemplary academic record (Dean’s List every semester) and supporting letters of recommendation from academic sources.  Congratulations on receiving this competitive scholarship! For additional information on others receiving the UEC award for 2017, please see: http://thenewslinkgroup.com/clients/UEC/pdfs/2017/index.html#12

Welcome Ronaldo!

Ronaldo Herrera, an undergraduate in Mechanical Engineering joins the research group.  Ronaldo’s efforts will focus on bringing new image processing techniques to the lab to help with the interpretation of x-ray tomography data.

Welcome Raphael!

The research group continues to expand with Raphael Chanut, an undergraduate in Mechanical Engineering joining the research group! He will explore his interests in the high strain-rate mechanics of materials by supporting ongoing projects.

Welcome Raphael!

Raphael Chanut, an undergraduate in Mechanical Engineering joins the research group! He will explore his interests in the mechanics of materials through supporting on-going projects within the research group. Welcome Raphael!

Welcome Tanner!

A warm welcome to our newest lab member, Tanner Snow, a freshman supported by the Engineering Scholars program. Tanner will begin his engineering journey in the group creating CAD model of a 60mm diameter SHPB on campus

Welcome Nathan!

Nathan Briggs becomes the first graduate student to join the group.  Nathan is a U of U alumni, having earned B.S. degrees in Mathematics and Mechanical Engineering in Spring 2016. During his time as an undergraduate, he completed research opportunities at Washington State University and within the Mathematics Department at the University of Utah.  The lab is excited to have Nathan join us as we begin establishing the lab.
